But, if you prefer to celebrate indoors this time of year, many hotels around the city are hosting ticketed parties in conjunction with the event, including The Radisson Blu Aqua, Hilton Chicago and Marriott. Famous Navy Pier also hosts a series of spectacular parties and several party cruises, with celebrations leading up to midnight fireworks over Lake Michigan, which will be synchronized with Chi-Town Rising’s display.

New York City

No other city can offer the magnitude of celebration options, ranging from the most extravagant (read: expensive) to the fabulous and free. To avoid the traffic crunch, take Amtrak into New York Penn Station for $53. If you’re willing to arrive in the morning hours and spend the day guarding your spot, you might get close enough to high-five hostRyan Seacrest at Dick Clark‘s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. If you want the ball drop experience but don’t want the throngs of people, hop on the D train to Coney Island for its LED Ball Drop, followed by fireworks. The real party begins after midnight at the boardwalk bars and restaurants’ after-parties. Some of the city’s most beautiful midnight fireworks are across the East River in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, which is free and includes refreshments and entertainment. If you prefer margaritas to champagne, check out Jimmy Buffett and Huey Lewis and The News’ New Year’s Eve concert at the Barclays Center. Meanwhile, fans of cult band Phish are stoked to rock in 2016 at their New Year’s Eve concert at Madison Square Garden. Philadelphia

Perhaps the best thing about seeing out the year in Philly is that there are practically as many fabulous events for families as there are for the party crowd. Revelers with early bedtimes love Franklin Square’s Kids’ New Year’s Eve Countdown, featuring a 6 p.m. “square” drop, a dance party and great views of the early fireworks show at Penn’s Landing. Nearby is the Franklin-inspired Electrical Spectacle light show. For grown-ups, SugarHouse Casino puts on Philadelphia’s fireworks display over the Delaware River twice on New Year’s Eve — at 6 p.m. and again at midnight.
